Did you know?

  • All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.  Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906: Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al. 2004).

 Alyssa Johnson

Alyssa Johnson, 15 was selected as a recipient of the 'Dr. Mac J. Williams Sr. Salute to Academic Excellence Award'.

Alyssa has been an active club member since arriving in Florida almost three years ago. She was instrumental in the success of the 'Summer Rhythms' Project, which culminated in a wonderful display of dedication, talent and desire during the final performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall last summer. Alyssa, along with Jessica Krause (YOY candidate) and her twin sister, Danielle, are currently the driving force on the Teen Council at North Greenwood.

Alyssa continues to strive towards excellence in education while giving of herself as a 'Leader in Training' and doing whatever she can to add value to this dynamic programming.

This prestigious award is presented through St. Petersburg College and recognizes and encourages academic excellence. As part of the African-American History Month festivities, the Clearwater Campus hosted its annual recognition and awards ceremony honoring African-American middle and high school students who have excelled academically.  The Dr. Mac J. Williams, Sr. Salute to Academic Excellence Award, honors the memory and contributions of the long-time community activist, pastor, and educator. It is in his tradition of achievement and excellence that we encourage students to emulate.

The Awards ceremony was held on Friday, February 27, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in the Arts Auditorium on the Clearwater Campus.

Congratulations Alyssa!  You set a shining example of the work BGBC does and speaks directly to our promise to graduate youth!
