  • All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.  Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906: Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al. 2004).

St. Petersburg, FL. - On October 2, 2008 - student poets and staff from the Royal Theater Boys & Girls Club Arts Academy in Midtown St. Petersburg traveled to the University of the Virgin Island to perform in the Virgin Island Voices of Hope "Literacy and Spoken Word Festival". The St. Petersburg student delegates known as Poetic Collage Youth Society "Royal Voices of Hope" (PCYS) participated in several literacy and writing workshops over the 3 day festival and gave a stellar spoken word performance at the festival's conference dinner.

Students in U.S. Virgin IslandsThe students were formally invited by the Virgin Island Humanities Council to perform and participate in the festival after student poet, Patrick Miller's, vacation to the Virgin Island lead him to perform at a local youth poetry slam. Word got back to the V.I. Humanities Council about a gifted young poet from St. Petersburg, Fl. Patrick told his new friends at the VIHC about the Royal Theater and PCYS. They were impressed with Patrick and excited to invite PCYS to perform in the Festival. The Royal Theater PCYS would like to thank all those who contributed and donated to this experience, especially, the St. Petersburg Chapter of Links, Inc. All youth ages 10-18 are invited to join PCYS at the Royal Theater Boys & Girls Club.
